NICARAGUA WITH TANIKA HOFFMAN

Where did you surf?

We stayed in a beautiful resort, Rancho Santana, within the resort there are three incredibly fun waves. Our house overlooked the beach break, called Santana, with fun, uncrowded, A frame peaks all the way down the beach. Nothing beats waking up every morning to perfect weather, offshore winds and fun waves.

Playa Rosada, is a left point which is only accessible if you’re staying in the resort....for three days we surfed it with no one else out...and to make things even more exciting, there’s an amazing pizza restaurant on the beach, so between lefts and pizza all day, I was in heaven!

Panga drops is the other waves in the resort, we didn’t venture there much, just because we were completely hooked on the other two spots.

Early one morning, we took a boat trip to have a look at a few of the waves that are only accessibly via boat....we surfed a really fun reef/rock bottom wave, which is often compared to Trestles in California. It ended up being a rainy morning, but was still SO beautiful, the rain gave the ocean that incredible glassy, almost oil painting look.

Was this your first tiem surfing in Nicaragua?

As a junior I competed in Nicaragua in the ISA’s but didn’t surf the same area as this time round...and it’s always nice to just enjoy the surf and get to explore a lot more...I loved everything from Rancho Santana to the weather, waves, people and beautiful landscape.

What was the surf like?

There’s such a wide variety of surf, fun beach breaks, slabs, points...there was swell every single day and having so many spots to choose from is such a bonus....and thanks to Lake Nicaragua, it’s off shore every day.

What was the weather like?

We woke up to sunshine and blue skies everyday....most afternoons we had a bit of rainfall, but it made the afternoon surfs so much more special, the ocean glassed off and the sunsets were incredible.
